Just above ground level is a boxy stone structure tilting up towards the sky. Upon closer inspection, an entranceway leads down an expansive staircase to a subterranean space.
The structure, designed in 2014 by German architect Peter Haimerl, resides in Blaibach, a village in the German state of Bavaria, near the border with the Czech Republic. Like other communities, it faced a declining population and vacant town center as people leave the area. A government revitalization program funded construction and Blaibach has become a cultural magnet with this new concert hall that, at 200 seats, can hold fully one-tenth of the town’s population.
